(I) Artistic and Cultural Activities Promotion

The Art Center is engaged in inviting outstanding cultural groups to cooperate with the university. Every year the Art Center organizes the SYS Sunshine Art Festival (March - May) and Hsi-wan Performing Art Festival (October - December). Nonscheduled performance programs are carried out as well. The cultural activities are open to the public, in order to develop students’ interest in art and to promote art appreciation among citizens. Furthermore, the relationship between the university and people in southern Taiwan can be strengthened through the cost-free multiple artistic cultural activities. National Sun Yat-Sen University not only can be linked to the local region, but also can provide another opportunity for the citizens to participate in artistic affairs.

Performing Arts:

Since 1997, SYS Sunshine Art Festival and Hsi-wan Performing Arts Festival are organized every year. Overseas and domestic professional performing groups are invited. All of the performances are open to the community populations.

Visual Arts:

Since 1999, every year two to four exhibitions are planned at Hsi-wan Art Gallery to display artistic collections from reputed art galleries and museums. At the same time, at the second floor in Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall, the audience will be allowed to visit the breakfast room, study and bedroom where President Chiang and his wife used to stay. Several photos, which President Chiang had taken around 1960 in His-wan and Hamasen, are exhibited in the corridor as well.

(II) Artist-in-School Project

The “artist-in-school” project was established to promote an artistic and cultural atmosphere in our university, and to provide students and teachers with an opportunity to encounter art. Reputed artists are invited to stay for a short term to assist with the cultural development in the community and to provide feedback. This project was initiated this semester and will go on, under the patronage of the National Culture and Arts Foundation for the next three years. The winners of National Award for Arts are invited as artist-in-school. During their stay in school, “Artist-in-School Conference” and “Meet with Artist-in-School” sessions will be arranged. The fact that teachers and students in our university can communicate with artists, stimulates the cultural spirit in our university.
